CLIFFORD POSSUM TJAPALTJARRI

11/Dec/2004 - 13/Mar/2005

VENUE: Araluen Galleries

An Art Gallery of South Australia touring exhibition

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri was an original founder of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement in the early 1970's at Papunya. On a national and international level, Clifford Possum is one of Australia’s most well known and respected Aboriginal artists. Clifford’s first exhibition was in 1988 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. He was the first indigenous artist to be honoured with this kind of attention from the international art world, and the first early Papunya artist to be recognised with an individual retrospective exhibition by an Australian public gallery. Like Albert Namatjira before him, Clifford Possum was a pioneer, and an ambassador for Aboriginal art and for Aboriginal people.
