MOMENTS OF SEEING
The authenticity of being there…
With over 20 years in the art industry, Armstrong, Birmingham and Dober are coming together for this exhibition with a common bond – all the paintings in this exhibition were made outdoors (plein-air).
Plein-air painting seeks to express the experiential as it unfolds in real time. It is a way of working that asserts the authenticity of being there. In this way, plein-air painting can be seen to be about vision – as much about how we see as what we see.
Mark Dober, has a PhD in Painting from Monash University, his focus has always been to validate the importance of plein air painting. He has published articles and run workshops in oil painting and watercolour in the landscape.
Richard Birmingham founded the Melbourne Studio School in 98, where he has taught many students his unique vision – perception verses imagination. He and Stephen Armstrong have painted in the landscape as part of their practises since graduating art schools, VCA and RMIT Masters consecutively. All three artists, although normally separate, have come together for this exhibition, working together at the You Yangs and Darebin Creek to complete works.
For Armstrong, Birmingham and Dober the expressive potential of colour is of particular interest. Each in their own way, combines colour that is variously naturalistic, heightened or invented. Colour functions in their work as a pictorial equivalent to what is seen.
