VENUE: Craft A.C.T. Craft And Design Centre

Rosemary O’Rourke presents ethereal textile-based objects exploring her experiences of Catholicism. By examining the contemporary appropriation of these articles of faith through abstraction, O’Rourke creates a body of work that
evokes childhood memory.

Textile artist Rosemary O’Rourke’s presents an exhibition exploring her childhood memories through embroidery and textile vessels in Objects of Vertu in Craft ACT’s Gallery 1, Level 1, North Building, London Circuit, Canberra City. The exhibition will be opened at 6pm on Thursday 23 September 2004 by Bill Wood MLA, ACT Minister for the Arts and Heritage, and continues until 31 October.

O’Rourke takes her title from the Latin for excellence – vertu – and presents objects, vessels and garment-like forms which are both intriguing and delicate. Working with hand-stitched transparent organza, the objects are interpretations of her childhood experiences of Catholicism. The textile vessels, scapulars and garlands in Objects of Vertu have been re-fashioned from modern icons of Christian kitsch. O’Rourke also embroiders salt into the organza which adds a literal weight to the works and, like the cotton threads in work it adds stability and transforms the textile material into a structure.

O’ Rourke trained at the University of Tasmania Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours in 1996 and is currently undertaking Master of Fine Art by Research at the University of Hobart, Tasmania.
Her work is held in several public collections including the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Recently O’Rourke was included in the exhibition Design Island, contemporary design from Tasmania, presented at the Sydney Opera House in partnership with Object - Australian Centre for Craft and Design.
