DAVID HAWLEY

AKA: David Hawley
  • Abstract
  • Contemporary
  • Painter

Pattern and decoration are an essential part of David Hawley's painting practice. Organic line work and rich patterns similar to those found in antique fabrics decadently spill over Hawley's early canvas surfaces. The highly decorative compositions swirl and pulse with kaleidoscopic intensity.

Following the completion of a Masters Degree at the Tasmanian School of Art in 2003, Hawley has taken his fascination with pattern further. Replacing canvas is plywood; onto which Hawley places screen prints of images distorted by the photocopy process. The result is pattern jammed, skewed and repetitively reproduced.

Hawley was the recipient of a NAVA Visual and Craft Artists Grant in 2004 and an Australian Postgraduate Award in 2002. In 2005, Hawley will complete a series of new abstract paintings, developed with the assistance of a 2005 Arts Tasmania Project Grant.
