Debra Johnston is an Expressionist. Her paintings are vibrant in colour and rich in texture, with gestural brushstrokes reflecting her emotions and various states of mind.
Her previous two exhibitions at Falkner Gallery in 2004 and 2005 were extremely well received by keen and responsive viewers; most works being quickly sold.
The latest exhibition entitled “Headspace” again explores her emotive style, this time selecting the portrait as her motif. She states: “Like the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, I paint my own reality, an inner reality. The work presented is a synopsis of my thoughts, emotions and expressions. My artistic life is at a brink of refreshment and rebuilding…. At times, I am still sad; at times, I still cry; at times, I still question; At times, why?”
Each portrait tells an individual story and has a unique history, and yet each has the ability to speak to others, calling on and reflecting their own life journeys.
