Utopia meets Lake Mackay at Japingka Gallery when two highly acclaimed, senior, Award winning artists from very different parts of Australia come together for a new exhibition at Japingka Gallery to paint their country and the spirits that reside there.
Linda Syddick, a member of the Pintupi people from Lake Mackay, W.A. and Evelyn Pultara from the Utopia Community north of Alice Springs are around the same age as both were born around 1940 and both experienced a very traditional upbringing in their respective Communities. However, they were subject to very different traditions, initiations and customs that are peculiar to their own Communities. Both artists paint the spiritual aspects of their country, but the treatment reflects their respective birthplaces.
Linda Syddick was named as the 1996 Aboriginal Artist of the year and has been a four-time finalist in the prestigious Blake Prize as well as runner up in the National Telstra Award. Linda is also represented in the Australian National Gallery. Linda’s paintings depict the very remote country based in and around Lake Mackay on the West Australian/Northern Territory border north of Kintore.
Linda is a deeply religious woman and her works uniquely reflect both her extensive knowledge of the Tingari Dreaming as well as her Christian beliefs. In many of her ethereal, mystical paintings, Linda intriguingly mixes the two beliefs with some of the Tingari Spirits such as the Emu Spirit being represented as ascending to Heaven.
Evelyn hails from Central Desert region of Utopia, some 270 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs. The highly collectable, Evelyn Pultara is the late, great Emily Kngwarreye’s niece and Evelyn carries on her Aunt’s legacy by painting large vibrant canvasses that depict the spirits associated with the now famous “Yam Dreaming” series. Evelyn brings her own interpretation to this significant Dreaming, however, echoes of her famous Aunt’s style can still be discerned in her beautiful paintings that seem to shimmer and radiate with the desert heat.
This new exhibition is a rare opportunity to view and compare two senior woman artists painting their Dreamings and to see how two very different artists’ traditions treat the spiritual subject matter and iconography of their spiritual Dreamings and the aerial views of their country.
