The exhibition “Groundwork” by Castlemaine artist Robyn Gibson is an intuitive response to the physical landscape of Central Victoria. Abstract monoprints and collages show the aesthetics of form and the repeated patterns of leaf litter, exposed bedrock and regenerating forest. The land’s surface qualities and rich layering are suggested by the layering of colours and scratchy surface markings. Different viewpoints are depicted and are often combined in the one work - cross-section or stratification, microscopic views, and macroscopic or birds-eye views explore how as humans, we respond to the landscape on different levels.
Robyn states: “The art making process for me reflects this theme of groundwork – building layers, a foundation on which to express an idea or feeling; a background on which a story is woven and surface quality is built up, just as the natural landscape builds layers on which to further flourish”.
