Young Magpie, Linocut
Every two years Carolyn Graham holds an exhibition at Falkner Gallery and her many followers eagerly await her latest output. They will not be disappointed as she continues to demonstrate a remarkable simplicity and boldness of style in depicting her subject matter.
Rather than expansive landscapes as in the past, her recent works depict windswept trees, the majesty of Melbourne’s palm trees and spirited hunting dogs and birds.
Her linocut technique reflects her direct approach to her art. She writes: ‘I live a short tram ride from the parks and gardens of Melbourne, and this past year I have been wandering about drawing trees. I often draw from memory and the drawings are done quickly. Hopefully the finished prints will have the spontaneity of the original sketches.’
Each image does indeed capture that spontaneity; the colours are reduced to a very few, the outlines are bold and direct and each subject expresses its true essence.
